just in these minutes the #berlin state opera house (staatsoperberlin) re-opens their gates after seven years of intense reconstruction at their original venue unter den linden in berlin-mitte. we got the chance to see and photograph the new opera hall last sunday on an empty meet with visit_berlin.
very interesting is the modern ceiling construction by #knippershelbig, which extends the roof height and makes the acoustics even better.

Taking Berlin by storm…

Today’s show started late as the baritone was stuck in traffic due to the ongoing demonstrations against right wing parties.
An important cause and worth the wait in any case.

It is already the third time for me to see this production. I was eager to see Jenufa, so I booked Daphne and Traviata as well for this weekend in Berlin.

The staging is simple, yet timeless and I particularly love the big broken mirror in which Violetta can see her upcoming fate. The skull she sees in the mirror is portrayed by dancers in white outfits. They arrange their bodies to form a skull. There’s also the sands of time that are constantly running.

A great cast consisting of:

Paolo Fanale as Alfredo and amartuvshinenkhbat as Giorgio Germont.

pretty_yende_official was again (having seen her several times in Vienna’s production) stunning as Traviata. Great acting combined with her uniquely beautiful voice. Breathtaking coloratura and goosebump moments aplenty. Standing ovations obviously.

Kudos to the talented ensemble members who made this cast complete.

Happy World Opera Day 2023

What opera means to me…
It’s more than the music. It’s about the live experience which results in a life experience. It’s about the human voice, the common journey of the people on, in front of and behind the stage, about the sound that brings out emotions inside us.
No performance is the same.

This year has been jam packed with fantastic operas and I’m very grateful to be able to see one at the snap of a finger.

My beloved wienerstaatsoper almost feels like a second home at times.

Another opera house I like to call home is staatsoperberlin as it’s beautiful and also offers highest quality performances.

Two new houses I visited in early 2023 were:

operzuerich where I got to see La Traviata and a rare baroque opera, Eliogabalo.

staatsoperhamburg was also a nice house with interesting productions (Cosí/Tosca). However their photography policy should be revised. Hamburg also offers a great alternative for concert versions of operas at elbphilharmonie where I had the chance to see jakub.jozef.orlinski in Tolomeo in May.

Despite the great bayerischestaatsoper at the Nationaltheater, where I’ve seen some outstanding operas, I discovered Prinzregententheater this summer for an amazing version of Semele, again with Orlinski and another favourite spikelmyers

In June I finally managed to go back to London for the first time since 2019. A lot has changed since then (Brexit), but the royaloperahouse was amazing as ever.

Summer is for festivals and bregenzerfestspiele and salzburgerfestspiele always serve great and unusual performances. I loved Madame Butterfly (with and without rain) and Nozze/Troyens were outstanding, too.

Last but not least, the best curtain call goes to: Semele 🏆

Tender moments

A new Medea after yesterday’s reprise. This time a real baroque opera and due to politics, the only real French opera by Marc-Antoine Charpentier.

The production was nothing groundbreaking. In fact Peter Sellar‘s approach was a bit dull. A big part of it was the lacklustre staging. However, I liked the costumes.

Musically this left nothing to be desired. Simon Rattle is just like no other when it comes to conducting baroque music. I watched him closely tonight and all I can say is that he has a very gentle yet precise way of conducting. But to be fair he had one of the best baroque orchestras under his baton tonight. The freiburgerbarockorchester was just amazing and produced a breathtakingly rich sound, but also played along with Sir Simon, when delicate and tender moments were required.

The outstanding sound was paralleled by some fantastic singers.

Of course magdalenakozenamezzo was the obvious choice as Médée. Her beautiful voice combined with her intelligent acting was just awesome. Brava! 🙌🏻

The surprise of the evening for me was reinoudvanmechelen
He was Jason and had a very long and difficult part. But he delivered the most beautiful high notes, great nuances and colourful phrases. Breathtaking! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻

Also another memorable performance by ensemble member #GyulaOrendt who again gave a very sensitive and emotional portrayal with his silky smooth baritone. Bravo! 👏🏻
