Also a little bit my motto today as I took the night train to Berlin this time. A bit of a bumpy ride.

I felt a little tired before the opera, but as soon as Calaf started to sing, I was wide awake.

tenormuratkarahan was absolutely phenomenal as Calaf. His timbre is high, sounds fresh and has lots of overtones. Bravo! 🙌🏻

This time annasamuil took over as Turandot. It was her role debut and I really liked her interpretation. Much gentler and soulful than other Turandots I’ve heard before. 👏🏻

Similar to Vienna, Staatsoper Berlin has a really strong ensemble. This particularly shows when the small roles become bigger than usual. In this case Ping, Pang & Pong were favourites with the audience. Sung by siyabonga_j_maqungo andresmorenogarciatenor and Gyula Orendt, this incredible trio stole the show.

Another touching performance by olgaperetyatko as Liu. This role really suits her well and she looked stunning complete with bleach blonde wig.

renepapebass was a beautiful Timur with a warm and gentle sound.

I saw this version of Turandot last year, but I feel it has improved since then.
The staging is focusing on the circus surrounding the Turandoll. It sometimes even feels intimate like a ‘Kammerspiel’ (chamber play). Complete with symbolism ranking from Francis Bacon to Charlie Chaplin to Michael Jackson.

Kudos also to to the enthusiastic conductor maxime.pascal

A fantastic last performance of this run in the 2022/23 season.

Another premiere at Staatsoper Unter den Linden. This time for Daphne by Austrian composer Richard Strauss. One of his sweeter sounding pieces, despite the mythical subject.

Director theromeocastellucci took the audience into a cold (emotional) winter setting, again with many symbols and dream like sequences. Snow was the prop de jour and the whole stage was covered in deep fake snow by the end of the opera. I wasn’t as impressed as by Salzburg‘s Don Giovanni, but it was still an appealing abstract interpretation.

Musically this was all about vera.lotte.boecker who was the unparalleled star of the show. And quite right so! She was a beautiful Daphne and even had her real name Vera written on her coat.

Her young admirer, Leukippos, was sung by magnus__dietrich
Quite a big role for this young singer, which he handled impressively well. Bravo!

A great performance also by anna.kissjudit who shone with her beautiful dark silky timbre. Gorgeous.

Today... Macbeth
My last evening in Berlin was reserved for the dernière of Giuseppe Verdi's "Macbeth", libretto by Francesco Maria Piave and Andrea Maffei, at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden and it has been a pleasure to see such a spectacular performance of this brilliant opera in Harry Kupfer's interesting and intelligent production. I have to start with Fabio Sartori, who was just breathtaking as Macduff and who showed a deeply touching and intense performance. It's always fascinating to hear Sartori's incredible voice in all its facets. His moving and highly emotional "Ah, la paterna mano" was definitely a highlight. Bravo! What a great performance by this fabulous artist. Tonight I should write this sentence four times, because to see Sartori, Netrebko, Salsi and Furlanetto in the same production, that's absolutely amazing. Anna Netrebko was splendid as Lady Macbeth. Her singing was magnificent and her acting is just phenomenal. The same has to be said for Luca Salsi as Macbeth, who's not only a wonderful singer, but also a distinguished actor. Ferruccio Furlanetto's performance as Banquo was excellent and to hear his unique voice is just a delight. Fine performances by Andrés Moreno García (Malcolm), Evelin Novak (Kammerfrau), Friedrich Hamel (Arzt), Dionysios Avgerinos (Mörder/Erscheinung), Insoo Hwoang (Diener) and Philipp Yoshi Lange & Ferdinand Straub (Erscheinungen). Imposing orchestra and chorus under the baton of Bertrand de Billy. Not the best audience tonight, but still frenetic applause for the artists at the curtain call. It was a pleasure to meet alexander.julius.leventov in tonight's performance and I hope your long journey wasn't in vain. My last hours in Berlin and I already start missing this strange but loveable city.
